Evening Hymn

Release Date:

In celebration of Clare College’s 700th anniversary, the Choir have recorded ‘Evening Hymn’, a selection of much-loved classic choral music including William Byrd’s Laudibus in Sanctis, Henry Balfour Gardiner’s Evening Hymn, and Edward Bairstow’s Blessed city, heavenly Salem. These works are paired with world premiere recordings of Cecilia McDowall’s The Magi and Lucy Walker’s Preces and Responses, both composed for the Choir. The album also features the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A by William Denis Browne (Clare 1911), a former Clare College organ scholar, contemporary of Ralph Vaughan Williams at Cambridge, and friend of Rupert Brooke; Denis Browne died shortly after Brooke at Gallipoli in 1915.

This disc will be available to subscribers of BBC Music Magazine in the New Year.
