Asia Tour Blog - Day 9

Today was a pivotal day in the tour schedule – we had reached the half-way point. Having given an open rehearsal in Macau, two concerts in Hong Kong, school workshops in Singapore and two concerts in the wonderful Yong Siew Toh Conservatoire, today was one of those rare occasions when we read the words ‘FREE DAY’ in Alice’s ever-colourful schedule. In essence, it was a travel day to reach Penang for the start of our week in Malaysia, but with our flight from Changi airport not scheduled until 2230 this allowed for a day of relaxation and final sightseeing in the wonderful city of Singapore.

Sunday the 4th of September was the first opportunity for most of the choir to sleep in, thus leading to a situation in which a ragtag group of bright eyed and bushy tailed individuals, as well as some who had obviously enjoyed the prior evening a little too much, met in the lobby of the Mariners’ Club, excited to be performing in the first official concert of the tour.

Saturday the 3rd September saw the choir arise at an early hour to catch the morning ferry to Macau. Most of the choir departed at 7.30, albeit not in the best of shapes following the previous night’s partying chez Mao, but for one member of the choir, whose night had only recently ended, knowledge of the choir’s departure was as absent as the bass 2’s ability to sing sotto voce. ‘Illness’ seemed to be the only explanation for Greg Barber’s absence...

On Thursday the First of September, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, went to Heathrow Airport in order to catch a plane to Hong Kong. Apart from the fact that Choir Administratress Alice Halstead made everyone arrive four hours early (apart from Graham Ross who strolled into the airport 10 minutes before departure), this entire segment was distinctly uneventful.
